How do I hang my pictures above a sideboard?
Pictures play a central role in decorating your apartment. They gain impact when placed above a piece of furniture such as a sofa or a sideboard. However, your pictures don’t always have to be hung centrally above the furniture. A left or right alignment can sometimes create a more harmonious effect than a centered arrangement.
For a successful arrangement above a sideboard, there are a few rules to consider. The installation of the artworks should also be well thought out. Nothing is more frustrating than a crooked or poorly secured picture hanging above a dresser. Before you start hanging the pictures, we have a few tips for you on how to skillfully arrange your pictures above a sideboard or dresser and hang them on the wall with ease.
How do I find the best position for my pictures above a sideboard?
Dear GAEKKO team,
We recently purchased a new sideboard from the Swedish furniture store IKEA and have decorated our living room with it. Currently, the wall behind the sideboard is still bare, and everything looks rather dull. That’s why we want to enhance the wall behind the console with pictures. We are not sure yet whether we should place a single wall art or a small group of pictures behind the sideboard.
At what height should I hang my pictures above the sideboard, or what is the optimal distance between the console and the bottom edge of my frame to create a harmonious overall look? Do you have any tips on how I can enhance my wall behind the console with wall art?
Thank you and regards,
Leni
Placing pictures on a sideboard: Leaning them against the wall?
One option where you completely avoid nails and screws is to lean your pictures against the wall. Sideboards are not only useful pieces of furniture but also wonderful displays for your pictures. The piece of furniture provides a great surface on which you can showcase your pictures as follows:
The easiest way is to lean the picture frames on the sideboard against the wall. Similar to a picture ledge, you simply place the picture at some distance from the wall on the sideboard and lean it against the wall at a ten to twenty-degree angle. This looks particularly impressive when your pictures are framed in a cool frame with a mat. But you can also casually lean unframed artwork against the wall. The great advantage is that you can easily adjust your pictures slightly to the left or right at any time. This method is especially suitable for the indecisive because why settle when everything can be redecorated completely anew tomorrow?
At what height should a picture hang above a sideboard?
To ensure that your frames harmonize with your space, there needs to be a connection between the artworks and the environment. The proportions of a room and the furnishings play a central role in choosing the right motifs and frames. The size of your pictures or the arrangement of multiple pictures significantly determines their placement in the room. While large picture walls require more space, hanging small pictures also works well in smaller rooms.
To determine the optimal height for your picture above a sideboard, you should always consider the furniture in your planning. How wide and how tall is the sideboard? Can I arrange multiple pictures on the wall below the sideboard, or perhaps just one? Visually, pictures appear harmonious when they are about two-thirds to three-quarters as wide as the sideboard above which they are hung. This rule follows the considerations of the golden ratio. Your pictures will look particularly balanced if you align their height with other lines or edges in the room. These can be, for example, edges of windows, doors, sofas, or other pieces of furniture.
Do you want to hang only a single picture frame above your sideboard? If you take your own position into account when hanging the picture, the optimal height of your frame can be quickly determined. When viewing the picture standing up, about one-third of the artwork should be above eye level, and two-thirds should be below. Regardless of the actual size of your picture, the center of the picture is always between 1.40 and 1.50 meters. If you primarily view the picture while sitting on the couch, you can adjust the height slightly downward.
To establish an appealing relationship between the frame and the sideboard, consider the following: For a sideboard, the lower edge of the frame should be approximately 20 to 30 centimeters away from the shelf. This small distance prevents the wall art from appearing disconnected and creates a unified look with the sideboard. Do you want to hang an entire group of pictures above your sideboard? If you want to hang multiple works in different formats on the wall behind your sideboard, here are some tips: Since a regular sideboard is usually not very wide, you should choose small artworks. In a small wall space, small formats, such as the Petersburg hanging method, are often ideal.
