Hang a poster on the wall? Here are the options available!
Posters are not always the first choice when it comes to decorative wall design. However, posters offer several advantages over traditional picture frames, canvas prints, or images on materials such as aluminum dibond or acrylic glass: posters are particularly affordable and can be easily replaced and rearranged. The days of tape marks and pinholes in the wall are long gone.
Today, you can hang posters on the wall without holes and without damaging the poster. One creative way of hanging them is using wooden strips. These poster rails (also called clamping rails) come in various designs. The clamping strips can be made of oak or aluminum.
The poster rail is an exceptional wall decoration. However, there are numerous other ways you can decoratively hang your poster on the wall. How to do it and how to stylishly hang a poster without a picture frame, you will find out in our DIY guide.
Can you build a poster rail yourself?
Hi GAEKKO,
I’m an absolute wall decor enthusiast, and I don’t think there’s a spot left where I don’t have a collage or poster on the wall. Since I’ve been using simple thumbtacks to hang almost all my posters, which leaves unsightly holes in the wall, I’m looking for a new and creative way to hang my posters.
These poster rails seem to be all the rage, but when I saw the price of a simple wooden rail, I nearly passed out. There must be a much cheaper way to do it, right? Otherwise, I’ll end up paying more for the rails than for the actual posters I want to hang.
Perhaps you have other DIY ideas on how I can creatively hang my posters on the wall without much hassle?
Thank you very much and best regards,
Melanie
Your Custom DIY Poster Rail: A Guide
Making a DIY wooden poster rail is not rocket science. Before spending unnecessarily on plain oak wood rails, you can quickly assemble them yourself. Here’s the material and tools you’ll need:
4 wooden rails (preferably half-round profile rails)
6 small nails
2 screw hooks
Hammer
Hand saw or scroll saw
Twine or string
And last but not least: the poster 😁
Here’s how to do it:
First, cut four wooden rails to match the width of your poster (plus 2 cm overhang on both sides). Then, hammer 3 nails into each end and in the middle of the two profile rails. Hammer the nails in far enough so that they almost come out on the backside. Caution: Your nails should not be longer than the folded profile rails. However, they should be long enough to connect both pieces of wood.
Next, insert your poster between the wooden rails and align it in the middle. Then, hammer a nail into the two opposite rails. This will prevent your poster from slipping. The two screw hooks serve as hangers, which you screw into the upper rail. Now, all you have to do is tie the twine to the screw hooks. If you leave the twine a bit longer, it forms a nice triangle, and the poster can be hung on it with a small nail. Instead of twine or jute string, you can also use a black leather cord for aesthetic reasons. And there you have it, your homemade DIY poster rail.
Of course, you can also purchase ready-made poster or clamping rails. Most poster rails have a natural look with real oak wood and use magnets instead of nails for attachment. Thanks to the magnets, the clamps can be opened and closed repeatedly, allowing you to easily insert a new poster. This way, you can hang new designs using the poster rails and change your posters anytime.
