What is aludibond and how heavy is this material?
An alu-dibond is composed of 2 aluminium composite plates that are thermally bonded with a polyethylene core. Therefore, Dibond is lighter than aluminium with the same diameter. Alu-Dibond is characterised as a light, flexible material.
Due to the temperature, Alu-Dibond will neither expand nor contract and can therefore also be used outdoors. Besides the design of living rooms or offices indoors and outdoors, you can also use Alu-Dibond for the production of boards, signs or advertising. At many of the larger online printing companies you can have your own motif on Alu-Dibond refined either as a direct photo print on aluminium or as elegant fine art.
If you don’t have your own photo, the print shops also offer countless custom motifs that you can have printed on aluminium dibond in various formats. You can also order larger formats of your photos or selected motifs on plates by direct printing. Lamination on aluminium dibond is ideal for your photos. Lamination on aluminium dibond sets the scene perfectly and permanently for your image. Your photos from your last holiday, photos of your loved ones or a timeless photo are printed on high-quality photo paper, which makes colours and contrasts look even more real.
With the GAEKKO hanging system, you can hang your pictures on Alu-Dibond on your wall without drilling or nailing and therefore without holes.
Alu-dibond, acrylic glass or canvas - what is best for my photo?
Of course, there is no general answer to this question, as the choice of photo product always depends on personal taste. In addition, the motif and the colours of your picture play a decisive role in the selection of the ideal material and the perfect print. Especially with the photo products on AluDibond plates, your photos shine in absolutely rich colours and subtleties on the matt surface. Here we briefly describe the differences between canvas, photo on plate or without frame, such as Alu-Dibond or acrylic glass, and gallery prints, and what is best suited for which motif as a direct print:
Photo on canvas: Particularly suitable for classic art prints, self-painted artworks or abstract motifs. They have no distance to the wall, are flush with the wall and are stretched on a wooden frame.
Photo on Alu-Dibond: Particularly suitable for skylines and landscapes, architectural photos or horizons.
Photo behind acrylic glass: Particularly suitable for intense colours, for example in night shots or underwater pictures.
A photo on panel, such as Alu-Dibond and acrylic glass, must be provided with a hanging system and spacers. Due to the lack of a frame, the hanging is fixed at a small distance of a few centimetres from the wall, which in turn creates a floating look.
How do I hang my Alu-Dibond picture?
Your direct print on hard foam board, whether mounted on Alu-Dibond, Forex plates or otherwise, is classically designed so that you can do without a frame. Aludibond panels are either delivered with an already mounted hanging system or without. In the case of the latter, the customer must necessarily look for a proper mounting system himself. If a hanging system is already pre-installed, many people look for an alternative way to hang the picture on the wall without damaging the wall.
As a rule, Alu-Dibond pictures are supplied with a simple standard suspension consisting of two mirror plates that are glued to the back of the picture at exactly the same height. To ensure that your mural hangs straight later, you need to use a spirit level to make sure that you are holding the picture straight. Then use a pencil to mark exactly where the mirror plates are to be attached.
In addition, you can purchase an aluminium mount from many suppliers. The aluminium frame is attached to the back of the picture. To do this, however, you must drill two holes in your wall. With the help of two screws, the picture can then be moved to the left or right at any time thanks to the continuous rail. This alternative does not require spacers, but it is quite expensive and not recommended due to the complicated assembly and elaborate drilling. The drilling in particular leaves unsightly holes in your wall and the mounting of the self-adhesive rails on the back of your picture is quite time-consuming. In addition, with wide Alu-Dibond formats, several holders such as screws or nails must be aligned horizontally in order to hang the Alu-Dibond picture straight.

Mounting your Alu-Dibond picture with mirror plates – also called adhesive plates or mirror hangers – is quite simple: hammer two nails into the wall at the pre-marked points at a 45 degree angle so that they point diagonally towards the ceiling.
For larger formats, it is advisable to do without nails and to use dowels and screws to ensure that the mural is securely fastened. To do this, drill a hole at the height of your marking. Our tip: A spirit level helps to fix the holders on a straight line. Sink the dowels into the pre-drilled holes in your wall and screw in the screws. Now you can mount your picture on Alu-Dibond on the nails or screws. Make sure that your picture is hanging correctly and is securely fastened to the hanging system.
When mounting your picture on alu-dibond, you should pay attention to the distance to the wall. Look for the right distance from the wall so that there is enough space between the wall and the wall mount. Your Aludibond picture should also not protrude too far from the wall. So-called spacers for all AluDibond, acrylic glass, Forex and other panel pictures without frames are often supplied with the hanging system. To prevent your pictures from hanging at an angle on the wall, the spacers are glued to the back of the pictures at the bottom corners. If necessary, use a spacer to avoid damaging the wall or your pictures. In the case of sloping walls or sloping roofs, also make sure that the hanging is correctly mounted.
