What are my options for decorating the wall behind the TV?

We moved into our house in April and have been discussing decorating our wall behind the sofa ever since. There is no doubt that we want to beautify the living room wall above the TV. Currently, the wall is still totally bare and everything looks pretty drab. So we’d like to spruce up our wall behind the TV, as a little color would do it a world of good.

Our television hangs on the wall at a height of about 1.40 meters with a simple wall mount. In our living room, we’ve been considering decorating the wall behind the TV with an informal collage for months. However, since we are not sure how the images would look best in combination with the technology, we have not dared to do it yet.

Wall of images to divert attention from the television

Does the television like a black hole in your living room bother you? Are you one of those people who want to see as little technology and cables as possible in your home? Diverting your attention from the television with images on the wall works very well.

But first, let’s explain how to mount your flat screen TV on your wall and what is the optimal height of your TV on the wall. Gone are the days when you put your TV with a stand on a dresser or sideboard. It is much more elegant to hang the TV on the wall.

Choose a wall mount that is preferably VESA standard, requires the least amount of clearance between the wall and the TV, and is best suited for the intended use. If you watch your TV while sitting on a couch, the center of the screen should be at eye level. The distance from the sofa should be 2 to 3 times the diagonal of the screen. Are you watching television standing up? Then the center of the screen should be at a height of 1.70 meters from the floor. Starting from your TV set, you can now place your photo frames around it.

Flat screen TVs are also a kind of picture frame. So it makes sense to place them in an appropriate environment. If possible, place several larger photo frames around the TV. The type of hanging plays a rather subordinate role. It does not matter if the pictures are hung on the edges or mixed wildly, as in the Petersburg hanging. However, you should make sure that the TV is the central element of your picture wall and that you always arrange your pictures starting from the TV. However, the arrangement is calmer if you line up your paintings along the top or bottom edge of the TV.

Well-placed murals around a television set visually camouflage it and thus take away its dominance on the wall. Our advice: You should make sure that the distances between your TV and your frames are not too great. Instead, it is advisable to place the wall pictures at a small distance from the TV and at an appropriate height from the ceiling on the wall. This way, the gallery wall is also perceived as an overall picture and the TV is no longer perceived as too dominant.
