What should I look for when hanging pictures over a fireplace?

Fireplaces are nice and a welcome feature in any home, especially during the cold season. Nothing beats a firewood flame when it’s particularly cold and damp outside. The play of flames in the fireplace creates a pleasant atmosphere in the house, while the fire creates a cozy warmth.  The decoration of the fireplace is a central aspect of the design of a living room. To further enhance the warmth, many people like to decorate the fireplace with pictures.

The easiest way to do this is to attach the artwork to the mantelpiece. But drilling into it? And what would the chimney sweep say? It’s probably not such a good idea… Since you should never just drill a hole in the chimney, we show you how you can still decorate your chimney with beautiful pictures.

We show you what you need to consider when hanging pictures over your fireplace.

With our photo holders, you decide: Glue, nail or drill!

Do I have to nail or drill a hole in the wall of the fireplace?

Hello GAEKKO,

I would like to hang some pictures above my fireplace in the living room and I was wondering if there is anything I should consider?  I would like to fix the pictures in the niche between the brick stove and the wall. Is it okay to drill holes in the wall? I am afraid to drill into the flue/air supply system and have the studs affect or damage something else.

I don’t want my chimney sweep to be on my case later and have to take down my pictures again. I’m even now afraid to put a small nail in the wall behind the fireplace. Do you have any ideas on how I can do without the holes altogether? Please help me.

Thank you and best regards

Lara

This is how it works

The perfect height and position of your pictures above the fireplace

First, you need to measure the width of your fireplace. The width of the picture(s) should ideally be two-thirds the width of the chimney. As a general rule, the chimney is about 1.30 meters high. In order for the picture and the chimney to form a single unit, the distance between the bottom edge of the frame and the chimney should not exceed 30 centimeters. If you only want to hang one design above your stove, you should make sure that the picture is aligned with the middle of the stove.

If you want to place other decorative items on your mantel, you can of course leave a little more space between the picture and the mantel. Note, however, that pictures are usually always hung at eye level. This is the case for a height of about 1.55 meters (measured from the floor).

Our advice: if you want to hang a painting on the wall above your fireplace, the type and color of the artwork should be in keeping with the style of the fireplace. For example, you should hang a futuristic, less rustic painting over an electric fireplace than over a brick and hardwood fireplace or a tiled stove. Always make sure that your furniture matches the stove and the pictures you are hanging.

Hang wall photos over a fireplace: It's also possible to do this without nailing or drilling!

When frames are in search of a prominent wall space in the room, drilling or nailing is not always an option. And drilling into the wall for a simple mural above the fireplace is not an option for everyone. In addition, it is generally not allowed to attach fasteners to the masonry of the chimney. We therefore advise against hammering nails into the wall above the fireplace. For your own safety, you should absolutely avoid making holes in the wall above the chimney. To avoid additional stress with the chimney sweep, we have the solution for you:

If you don’t want to drill holes or use screws or nails, you can use our self-adhesive picture holders. With the GAEKKO hanging system, you can easily stick any picture on the wall in any room and on any surface. Now you can stick your frames to the wall without hooks or tape. Leave the drill in the drawer! Our hangers can be mounted on the wall above your stove without nails and therefore without drilling..
