Hanging a picture with rope or cord: tips & tricks

There are many ways you can easily hang your picture on the wall. But it is not always as easy as you imagine. The biggest problem is to be able to hang the picture straight on your wall. Because a crooked picture on the wall not only looks stupid, but also disturbs you even more when you look at it several times.

But how do you get a picture straight and quickly hung on the wall? A simple rope, a string or a picture wire are methods that are not only increasingly used by museums but also in our own four walls for pictures with frames. The hanging process sounds more complicated than it actually is.

The cord or picture wire is knotted to two hangers or metal eyelets which are attached to the sides of the frame. The cord is then hung on one or two fastening points, e.g. simple nails or screws in the wall.

Do away with complicated rope systems: with our hangers you can stick your pictures on the wall from now on

Hanging pictures with picture or gallery rails

To avoid this problem, so-called picture rails with integrated rope suspension have been developed. You can hang the picture or gallery rail on the wall at a freely selectable distance and height directly below or on the ceiling. To do this, you usually have to drill holes in the wall or damage your wall with nails, as mounting with self-adhesive tape is not intended for this type of load.

With the right accessories, you can hang the picture rail directly from the ceiling. Once the gallery rail is attached, you have to hook the rope suspension or the rope into the picture rail. When choosing the rope, you can choose between a perlon rope or a steel wire rope. Perlon ropes are transparent and rather inconspicuous. Steel ropes, on the other hand, are an additional eye-catcher and give your picture frame an additional artistic accent.

Our tip: If you like it more inconspicuous, you should work with transparent cords, which are also used at exhibitions for pictures and galleries, among other things. The advantage is that the full attention remains on the hung picture.

You can move the rope or the cord along the picture rail to hang your picture or picture frame in the desired position and at the optimal height on your wall. You can then attach a picture hook to the rope suspension and the picture or picture frame can be hung on the rope. You do not necessarily have to hang your pictures at the same height. You can vary the lengths of the steel cables along the picture rail so that you can try out different hanging positions.

Another idea: Photos and postcards are much lighter and can easily be hung up with photo rope or photo canvas. You don’t need any additional picture rails for this, but can attach your photos directly to the photo rope with picture hooks or clips and thus design your very own photo wall.

Hanging pictures with rope and hanging systems

In this section, we will briefly introduce you to other ideas that will help you to quickly and easily attach a picture to the wall. These are so-called rope and hanging systems with which you can hang pictures of various shapes and formats on the wall, from photos and postcards to posters and picture frames.

  1. poster hanger or poster snapper: with the help of two simple clamping bars at the top and bottom, you can hang your posters and posters on the wall quickly and easily.
  2. plate holder or plate hanger: This hanging option is particularly suitable for pictures on plates. Here you do without a picture frame, but hang your pictures directly on the wall with the help of two hanging plates that are glued to the back of the plate.
  3. picture hooks and hooks for ceiling systems: Picture hooks come in a wide variety of designs, colours and shapes. No matter whether for light and heavy pictures or picture frames with perlon ropes or steel wire ropes or for valuable pictures with theft protection. Hook systems are widely used and hold the picture stably on the wall.

This type of hanging system is screwed or nailed to the wall. This leaves unsightly holes in the wall. In addition, hanging large pictures and frames with several hooks is time-consuming. If you want to glue your pictures to the wall or if you want to fix your pictures to a display in a simple way with only one hanging system, we have the idea: GAEKKO

Hanging pictures with rope or wire was yesterday

To hang your favourite pictures with wire, you need a sturdy picture wire and two eyebolts that are attached to the sides of the canvas. The picture wire is wound evenly around the screws. Then you can attach the wire to a steel nail that you have previously hammered into the wall. If you choose picture wire, the weight is evenly distributed on the wire, making it very easy to hang and align your picture.
With this type of hanging, your canvas always leans slightly downwards. Therefore, your canvas never lies completely flat against the wall, but stands slightly away from the wall. Many people see this as the biggest disadvantage of this hanging method.

Advantages and disadvantages of rope suspensions, gallery rails and co.

The great advantage of such rope suspensions as picture or gallery rails is above all the quick change of your paintings and frames. In addition, you can adjust the height of your pictures individually and do not need a spirit level to align your pictures straight. However, if you want to hang your pictures, paintings, art prints or photo prints permanently on your wall, there are better twine hanging systems.

Picture rails are usually very expensive and the mounting of your pictures, for example, if you want to hang them directly below the ceiling, is quite complex. Your paintings are mounted on hooks, which in turn hang on plastic ropes or wire. This means that your paintings or frames can move and shift very easily. In addition, the rails can turn grey over time. Last but not least, the picture wire or the photo rope gets dusty at regular intervals and therefore needs to be cleaned.

Our GAEKKO suspension system

GAEKKO makes hanging pictures child’s play. No more complicated picture or gallery rails. The GAEKKO hanging system makes it possible. With GAEKKO’s picture hanging system, dusty picture rails or dull picture hooks are a thing of the past. You don’t have to drill a hole in the wall for lightweight pictures, nor do you have to fix your pictures to the wall with nails.

Do away with screws and nails and stick your pictures on the wall quickly and easily with the self-adhesive tape. Our picture hangers attach any picture to your wall without holes, without wire or picture hooks and without drilling. And should your picture be too big or have a little more weight, you can easily attach it to your wall with the included screws or nails.
