Hanging pictures on the wall slightly tilted? This is how!

In the past, paintings (with or without picture frames) were often attached to a hook with a classic picture wire or a picture cord. This often resulted in the picture surface tilting slightly forward. Depending on the length of the picture wire, the inclination of the picture was more or less pronounced.

Hanging a picture tilted therefore means that the upper bar of the frame protrudes from the wall while the lower part is pressed against the wall. The longer the cord or wire, the greater the inclination of the picture surface and the more the picture protrudes from the wall at the top. This means that the greater the inclination of the picture towards the front, the greater the distance between the upper frame and the wall.

This method is still used frequently, especially for fixing mirrors. Besides simple mirrors, pictures from the Swedish furniture store IKEA are also attached to the wall with picture wire. We show you the advantages and disadvantages of this hanging method and give you tips on how you can hang your pictures on the wall without tilting them.

How do I hang my pictures on the wall with a slight tilt?

Hello all,

I have a new painting on canvas and would like to hang it tilted on the wall. What ideas do you have for hanging my painting on a wall tilted forward so that my stretcher is against the wall at the bottom and sticks out at the top? Do you understand what I mean? I mean the painting should be hung “tilted”. So the bottom part of the picture is against the wall, while the top part is a few centimetres away from it.

What is the best way to do this? Maybe someone can tell me how exactly to achieve such a wall clearance on the upper frame? At first I thought about using long screws or hooks. However, you would probably see the screws or hooks, which would look rather poor. I find the assembly with wire or string extremely complicated and I doubt whether it can be done evenly on both sides. But maybe you have an idea how I can hang my canvas or stretcher frame on the wall quickly and easily?

Greetings

Isabelle

Hanging pictures tilted? You should be aware of these disadvantages

Depending on the size and weight of your picture, however, the tilted version with a simple cord has some disadvantages. Especially with heavy pictures weighing more than four kilograms, it can happen that the cord becomes porous after some time and threatens to break. The fall could damage your picture frame. We therefore recommend choosing a robust hanging method for heavy pictures or using a rope made of metal.

But even fixing with picture wire can lead to complications. If the wire is only hung on one hook or nail, the picture frame can very easily start to swing. We therefore recommend hanging your picture on two picture hooks or nails with the string or wire. Placed at a certain distance from each other, two hanging points give larger paintings in particular more support and stability.
