Hanging pictures: The trick with the fork

You have a picture frame with a wire at the back and you just can’t manage to hang the wire over the nail? With frames with wire hanging, threading can be a real test of patience. Since you can’t see the back of the picture frame, you have to rely on your feeling and move the picture around on the wall until the nail sticks to the mount. You don’t succeed? This could be because you have driven the nail too deep into the wall. Or the wire keeps slipping off the nail. A fork can help here and serves as a real lifehack.

Before you hang up your pictures, you should hook the fork onto the nail with the prongs facing downwards. Now take your framed picture and run the wire over the fork. Thanks to the fork, the string or wire is guided onto the nail or screw as if by itself. If the frame now hangs securely on the string, you only have to pull off the fork. And your picture is already hanging on the wall. This helpful trick can save you a lot of time and nerves.

Hang pictures straight: The tape trick

In order to align a picture really straight, many craftsmen use the classic spirit level and mark the points of impact at exactly the same height on the wallpaper by measuring the correct position and the exact distance between the hangers. But especially with larger picture frames, where you can’t get by without drilling holes, the eyelets are usually very far apart and particularly deep. This makes it difficult to measure exactly, which means that it is more like estimating than precisely recognising where in the wall the second drill hole needs to be made. It is often necessary to re-drill if the two fixings are only a few centimeters apart or if the suspension points are not horizontal in the wall.

It is also quicker and easier: stick a strip of tape or masking tape to the back of your frame. On the tape you can mark two points with a pencil that correspond to the distance between the eyelets or other hanging devices. Now all you have to do is remove the tape or masking tape and stick it to your wall at eye level. You have a perfect template to determine where to drill holes in the wall or place nails later. This trick is especially helpful if you want to nail several pictures to the wall in an attractive hanging.

However, if you want to arrange several frames on the wall at once, it makes sense to first arrange them lying on the floor. This will give you a first idea of how the different sizes harmonise with each other and how they fit together. Next, you can draw the outlines of the picture frames on baking paper and reconstruct the position of the hangings on the wall. Now you can easily hammer nails into the wall, remove the baking paper from the wall and hang up the pictures.

You don’t have a spirit level at hand but still want to know if your picture is hanging straight? Our tip: With a simple string and a 1-euro coin, you can check whether your picture is hanging straight. Attach the coin to the string with some tape. Now you can align your picture on the wall and hang the string with the weight on the other side of the picture. If the weight hangs loosely, without being too far from the edge of the picture or touching the frame, then hang your picture straight.

Hanging pictures: The trick with the nail

Are you faced with the challenge of hanging a gallery picture on a concrete wall? When even steel nails fail in the face of concrete, you have two options: Either you use a drill, drill a hole in the wall decor and fix your picture with a dowel and screw. Or you can use a self-adhesive picture hook such as an adhesive nail and stick your picture to the wall.

However, you should not fix heavy frames to the wall with a glue nail. The only option is to use a drill or hammer. You should place the drill as vertically as possible on the wall. If the screw heads on the left and right are crooked, your picture may also hang crooked.

If you stick an old CD to the wall with masking tape so that the centre hole is above the drill mark, you can see exactly in the mirror image whether the drill is at the right angle. To make sure the drill doesn’t slip off when you put it in place, you can pre-drill a little with a thin drill bit.
