Finde the right space between pictures on wall

Hanging pictures: It's all about the right space!

Hanging your new artwork on the wall can be more complicated than you think. Most murals have a pre-assembled hanging system and can be easily hung on the wall with a screw or nail. However, there is still the question of where and at what distance you should hang it.

In the following, we have put together a few practical tips on how you can calculate the distance between your pictures and the wall, but also the distance between your pictures and each other. In addition, we show you how to hang your pictures at the optimal height to a piece of furniture such as a sofa and how to calculate the distance here as well. This way you can hang your wall pictures like a real pro, so that your pictures get the full attention!

Wondering what the ideal spacing of your images is? We give you instructions on how to calculate the perfect space. And we’ll also supply you with the right hanging system for your pictures.

Hanging a 5 split Canvas Print: What spacing do I need to choose?

Hello all,

I have a picture at home that consists of five parts. In order for the picture to look good on my wall, I am wondering how big the distance between the individual pictures has to be in order for it to look good?

Thank you & greetings

Chris

This way your motifs always hang at the right height and at the same distance from each other

The simple rule of thumb for the perfect height of your pictures is that the distance between the floor and the centre of your mural must be 145 to 155 centimetres. This height is also observed in many museums and galleries, as the pictures are then hung exactly at eye level. However, the correct height of your pictures also depends on other factors. Is your picture hanging above a sofa or couch? Do you have a normal ceiling height or perhaps an above or below average height for your room? A height of 145 to 155 centimetres is not always the optimal picture height. The best thing to do is to try it out to find out which height is optimal for your home.

You usually hang multi-part pictures in a row or along a line. After you have chosen the space and height for your pictures, you still have to determine the distance between the pictures. As soon as pictures follow a reference line at the same height, you should choose an equal distance between the pictures. A rule of thumb for multi-part pictures is a distance of about 5 centimetres. This makes the picture look like a unit and particularly harmonious.

Note the external framework and pay attention to the proportions

Before you hang a picture, you should first consider whether the intended wall area is sufficient for your pictures to be shown to advantage. If you want to arrange several frames on one wall, your wall should also be large enough. To ensure that your wall is not too cluttered and that your picture frames are in the right proportion to the wall, we recommend the 4/7 rule. This means that the wall pictures should take up 4/7 of the wall width. It is important to bear in mind that the wall is otherwise completely empty.

A simple example: If your wall is 4 metres wide, for example, your pictures should take up a maximum of 2.30 metres (4/7*4.0 metres) of the entire wall. With this ratio, your pictures will look balanced when hung up. For example, you can print three pictures 60 centimetres wide. You can always leave a space of 25 centimetres between the individual pictures when hanging them. This results in a total width of exactly 2.30 metres. (60+25+60+25+60=230) Of course, you should hang your picture frames in the middle of the wall and you will have the perfect ratio between wall and artwork.

Hanging pictures above the sofa: What space should I choose?

We are often asked at what height your mural should hang above a sofa and what is the perfect distance between the picture and the sofa. We have a few easy-to-implement tips for this: If you have a sofa with a backrest, the distance between the sofa and the couch should be about 30-40 cm. This means that when you are sitting on the sofa, your head should be slightly below the picture and not sticking directly into it. Because the distance between the picture and the couch is not too great, the overall picture looks much more harmonious.

Another way to present your pictures on a piece of furniture is with the help of a picture rail. On this you can arrange your pictures flexibly and rearrange them again and again. In addition to a standing photo wall or picture wall, you can also place small furnishing objects on it.

One disadvantage of the picture rail, however, is that you cannot flexibly vary the height. Only the horizontal distance can be changed on the strip, so you should choose the height carefully when hanging the picture rail.

At what distance do I fix several pictures on my wall in the living room?

Dear GAEKKO team.

I have several pictures of different sizes and shapes and would like to hang them on the wall in an original way? The pictures are very different: some have a passe-partout and picture frame, others are mounted on a canvas.

Can you tell me which places are particularly suitable for attaching pictures? I am also wondering what distance I should choose between the different sizes of pictures. Can you help me?

Thank you & greetings

Lisa

Arrange multiple frames and find the right spacing

You want to arrange several pictures at once and are looking for a suitable hanging? You are also wondering whether the different arrangements also require different distances to be observed. In our step-by-step guide you will find out which hanging suits your wall and your home:

To get a first feeling for a suitable arrangement, you should first place your pictures on the floor or on a table. Here you can already see how the distances of the individual pictures to each other work without disfiguring the wall through premature hanging and subsequent changes in height or position.

To check whether your hanging and the chosen spacing work on your wall, you can cut out the sizes of your picture frames on cardboard and hang them on the wall with adhesive tape or masking tape.

The last step is to align your frames with a spirit level and hang them over the cardboard. You can easily remove this once the frames are hanging on the wall.

Of course, the choice of hanging also plays a decisive role in choosing the right spacing. If you align several pictures along a centre line or edge, the distance between the pictures should not be too great and should always be the same.

Especially with symmetrical hanging arrangements such as grid hanging or edge hanging, you should make sure that the spacing is the same. With wilder arrangements such as the Petersburg hanging, on the other hand, the spacing can vary and be somewhat larger.

Therefore our tip for you: Rigid rules and even spacing are not always sensible. Before you put screws or nails into the wall, you should also consider the other furnishings and your own living situation. You should also take this into account when choosing the right spacing.
