How do I hang my pictures above a buffet?

Pictures play a central role in the decoration of your home. They are most convincing when placed above a piece of furniture, such as a sofa or a buffet. Your photos don’t always have to be hung in the center of the furniture. In some cases, a recessed hanging on the left or right can even be more harmonious than a central hanging.

For a successful arrangement above a sideboard, however, you need to follow a few rules. You should also think carefully about how you attach the artwork. After all, nothing is more annoying than a picture hanging crookedly or without proper support above a dresser. Before you start fixing your photos, we’ll give you some tips on how to cleverly arrange your photos above a dresser or chest of drawers and hang them on the wall in a few easy steps.

How do I find the best position for my pictures above a console?

Dear GAEKKO team,

We bought a new sideboard in the Swedish furniture store IKEA and decorated our living room with it. At the moment, the wall behind the sideboard is still bare and everything looks rather gloomy. That’s why we would like to embellish our wall behind the buffet with pictures. We don’t know yet if we will put a single mural or a small set of pictures behind the buffet.

How high should I hang my pictures above a buffet, or what is the optimal distance between the dresser and the bottom edge of my frame, in order to create a harmonious overall image. Do you have any tips on how to beautify my wall behind my dresser with wall pictures?

Thank you and best regards

Leni

This is how it works

Put photos on a sideboard: Pictures leaning against the wall?

A variation that completely dispenses with nails and screws is to lean your pictures against the wall. Sideboards are not only useful furniture, but also wonderful underpinnings for your photos. This furniture offers a large surface on which you can display your photos as follows:

The simplest variant is to lean the photo frames of the sideboard against the wall. As with a chair rail, simply place the picture on the sideboard at a distance from the wall and lean it against the wall at an angle of ten to twenty degrees. This is especially nice if your pictures are framed in a nice frame that includes a mat. But you can also lean unframed artwork against the wall. The big advantage is that you can move your images a little to the left or right at any time. This method is especially good for the indecisive, because why commit to something that can be redecorated later?

Advantages at a glance:
Self-adhesive
Without wholes in the wall
No frames or tools are necessary
Removable without residue

How high should a painting be hung above a buffet?

In order for your frame to fit harmoniously into your room, there must be a match between the artwork and its environment. The proportions of a room as well as the furnishings play a central role in the choice of appropriate designs and frames. The size of your picture or the arrangement in the case of several pictures decisively determines the placement in the room. While large picture walls require more space, hanging small pictures is also suitable for small rooms.

To determine the right height for your picture above a sideboard, you should always include the furniture in your planning. How wide and high is the buffet? Can you place several pictures on the wall under the buffet or just one? To our eye, pictures look harmonious when they are two-thirds or three-quarters as wide as the buffet they are over. This rule follows the principles of the golden ratio. Your pictures will look especially balanced if you base the height on other lines or edges in the room. These can be the edges of windows, doors, sofas or other furniture, for example.

Do you only want to hang one picture frame above your sideboard? If you consider your own position when hanging the picture, the optimal height of your frame can be found fairly quickly. When you are looking at the picture standing up, one third of the picture should be above eye level and two thirds below. Regardless of the size of your photo, the center of the image will always be between 1.40 and 1.50 meters. If you are viewing the image primarily from a seated position on the couch, you may want to adjust the height slightly downward.

To create an attractive relationship between the frame and the sideboard, you should consider the following: In the case of a sideboard, the bottom edge of the frame should be about 20 to 30 centimeters from the shelf. This small distance ensures that the mural does not appear isolated and forms a unity with the buffet. If you’d like to learn more about hanging paintings and calculating the distance, take a look at our guide.

Want to hang a whole assortment of pictures above your buffet? If you want to hang several works of art in different sizes on the wall behind your sideboard, here are a few tips: Since a regular sideboard is usually not very wide, you should choose small-sized works of art. If you have a small wall space, small sizes in the form of Petersburg hangings are often ideal.
